A Business Game on Communication and Cooperation within the EWC

Foto Foto Members of European Works Councils experience in this lifely training unit through active doing, what many lectures and presentations could only instruct theoretically. In this business game already hundreds of participants in German and international trainings experienced very close, what in fact the European Works Council is about (the picture is from such a training of the Stryker EWC). By means of a fictional company the participants were lead by our trainers through all thinkable stages and aspects of a real EWC. The business game is to recommend particularly to newly-created EWC bodies.

The following questions emerge in this business game like in the real EWC practice:

  • What to do, if investment decisions go at the cost of individual sites?
  • What possibilities are there to prevent social dumping and mutual play off?
  • What chances exist for a fair interaction with collegues from other countries?

The participants "play" themselves while our trainers take over the role of the management confronting the workplace representatives with constantly fresh bad news and chess moves. The declarations however are not invented but reproduce directors quotations in a multitude of real EWC meetings. Whether the workplace representatives at last hold their ground against management depends on how intense and trustfully they develop their own information and consultation culture within the EWC.

During the evaluation of the business game all important questions follow unavoidable:

  • How could the communication within the EWC be improved?
  • What has to be developed in order to be prepared for the emergency case?
  • Which potential influence on management could be claimed?
  • How could the different cultural resources be used fruitfully?
  • How could the local work force be included?

Finally it will be clear to all participants what may contribute to a succesful work of the EWC. In many cases a new push to the work fo the European Works Council results from this business game.
